If you write children's books, I have one more resolution for you for 2016. If you don't belong to SCBWI, join. If you're a member but not an active one, get involved. And if you're already involved, step up and volunteer to help or join the regional team. I promise you won't regret it.

The SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) is a fabulous organization. Since joining, I've learned and grown as a writer and found my tribe as a person. At this year's Florida regional conference in Miami, we heard from so many fabulous faculty members: Jonathan Maberry, Michele Hodkin, Christina Diaz Gonzalez, Debbi Ohi, and Tammi Sauer--and those are just a few of the authors, not mentioning the agents and editors.

My top three takeaways from the conference this year:

1. Help other people in the industry as much as you can. The publishing business is a business, but it's not a competition. Helping each other matters. I am so grateful for the opportunity to help writers in my local critique group and celebrate their successes. I often learn even more from them in the process.

2. Step outside of your comfort zone. Maybe this means striking up a conversation with someone in the field, even if you're an introvert. Maybe it means writing ambitiously or accepting well-considered feedback. As your comfort zone grows, so will other areas of your life.

3. Tension is everything. Whether internal or external, in the setting, tone, action or in relationships, keeping tension on every page of your manuscript will keep your readers turning the pages.

If you're a member of SCBWI, what are some the reasons you love it? Do you have other organizations that have made a huge impact on your writing life? Feel free to share below in the comments!
I received an Advance Review Copy of Until I Find Julian by Patricia Reilly Giff this summer, and it released on September 8, 2015.

The Summary:

Twelve-year-old Mateo lives in Mexico with his mother and grandmother, and his older brother Julian works across the border in the United States to support their family. When a raid on Julian's work site leaves him out of contact and possibly arrested, Mateo journeys across the border himself to find out what really happened.

The Review:

I enjoyed this contemporary middle grades story on several levels. The vivid descriptions of life in Mexico transported me into Mateo's world. Both his voice and his heart kept me turning the pages; I read the entire book in one day. And yet, the story as a whole left me a bit unsettled.

As an adult who reads mostly YA and MG novels, I rarely find myself reading through the lens of a parent. I've never been troubled by twelve-year-olds slaying monsters or going away to magical boarding schools, maybe because the fantasy element always reminds me that I'm reading a story. But in Until I Find Julian, I couldn't shed my "mother" glasses. Mateo travels alone through Mexico on foot. He pays a coyote to smuggle him across the border, then makes his way to Arkansas relying on the kindness of strangers. With no money, no food, and without speaking English, Mateo manages to find his brother's abandoned home. Until I Find Julian does ultimately end happily, but all along I felt more worried about Mateo than a desire to journey with him.

I plan to have my own eleven-year-old read this book to see how his reaction differs from mine; this may be a time when I'm too far out of the target audience to be objective.

3 out of 5 stars.
Some great resources have been shared on the Pitch Wars hashtag over the past week to help navigate the rules and language of publishing. Here are my favorites:

1. Dahlia Adler's Abridged Glossary of Pub Speak.

What is a WC, you ask? (Hint: It's not a potty in France.) The publishing biz loves abbreviations. A few years ago Dahlia Adler shared a fantastic glossary to help you wade through the alphabet soup of MSs, LIs, and CPs.

2. Query Shark

Literary agent Janet Reid hosts this must-read resource for querying writers. Though new-comers should read the entire website, in the post linked above, the shark herself boils down the answer to the essential question: What is a query letter?

3. Wordcount Dracula

Literary agent Jennifer Laughran keeps her former blog open for references like these, and Wordcount Dracula is one of the most popular posts. In it she explains the accepted norms for word counts (WC) in children's books.

4. Talent and hard work

Literary agent John Cusick addresses taking measure of yourself as a writer. He also recently posted here about effective queries.

Jackson wrote great post on what pre-orders mean for authors. (You can read the full post here.) Today I wanted to share some of that information, along an awesome middle grades book available for pre-order now!

Ordering ahead rocks for readers. You get the book delivered to your door on or sometimes even before release day, and you don't have to worry about a brick-and-mortar not having the title you've anxiously awaited.

Pre-orders can also be a great boost for the author. These numbers can increase the size of the initial print run and/or the promotional budget.

For all of those reasons, I was thrilled to pre-order My Seventh Grade Life in Tights by Brooks Benjamin last week! Check out the gorgeous cover and all the info:
But the far too common tragedies, national and local, washed over my news feeds, and a familiar sadness and frustration came with them. Suddenly my book love felt small and unimportant in the face of more and more brutality.

We all like to think these things won't keep happening, maybe because we all like to think that other people are basically good. But that's the problem. People aren't good. I'm not suggesting we don't have a gun problem, and a racism problem, and a sexism problem. But truly, deep down, we have heart problems.

We all feel sadness, anger, hurt, or entitlement. It's how we react to those feelings that not only define us, but also tear down or build up the people around us. I read the sentiment on social media this week that we need more regulations and enforcement, not more prayers. The comment broke my heart a little more, because it's not a one or the other proposition for me.

I am a Christian, so I see the world in the light of those beliefs. I believe the world is broken. That people are broken. I believe we need God, and that Christians and non-believes alike make messes of our own lives and God's intentions for us.

Even if you don't believe the Gospel, try to imagine loving someone enough to sacrifice the life of your child to save him. A person who hates and curses you. Who may be a liar, thief, or murderer. Or maybe just someone who tries to be good, but makes mistakes. I know I wouldn't be able to do it. But God did. And we are commanded to love each other as He did. Sometimes it's hard to love the people close to me, much less strangers or even people who would do me harm.

I think we could see amazing change if only we could genuinely love like that, and see that love multiplied out in the world. And as Christians, that kind of love can impact lives for Jesus. So I pray that I can love more like that, and that others will, too.

Next week, I'll be back to the book scene. But today, I just needed to share a little of the faith that keeps me going, even when things in this world look bleak.
I really enjoyed How We Fall. The relationship between two
cousins, Jackie and Marcus, is steamy, intriguing, and uncomfortable in a way
that amps up the tension from the opening chapter. The family dynamics,
including both sets of parents and many siblings, also give the story depth and
authenticity. I was skeptical at first to see how the mystery of Ellie’s disappearance
would play out with the complexity of the love story, and while I would’ve
liked a bit more of that plot line developed in the first half of the book,
Brauning did pull it all together in the end. My favorite secondary character was
Will, a fantastic alternative love interest. I would recommend this book to
fans of YA contemporary romance and suspense.

Imagine if I told you, an
adult who reads for entertainment, that you’ll now be required to answer a
question with a written response every time you put down a book or an article.
The articles will have more questions, with both multiple choice and long
written responses. They’ll ask you questions like this:

What is the purpose of
this sentence? They had a tiny yard.

Is it A.) To tell you the size of their
yard or B.) To explain why they built a tree house (That’s an actual question from
my son’s homework last night. The correct answer is B.)

And books…well, to make
sure you understand what you’ve read, you’ll have to write short responses every time you read, as well as a longer
summary and review when you finish the book.

I’m a writer, and that
doesn’t sound like “reading for pleasure” to me. The thing is, I’m also a teacher. I know that
you need kids to read, and you need them to get better at reading as fast as
possible, because your paycheck depends on it. Even the ones who didn’t eat
breakfast this morning or any morning. Even the ones who speak English as a
second language. Even the ones who hate reading because it’s hard and boring
and just doesn’t make sense.

No child left behind,
right?

You need them to read, and
you have to hold them accountable, and you have to prove that you tried,
even if you can’t show growth.

My fifth grade son starts
two full weeks of standardized testing Monday. My third grader already completed
his. I expected the homework to
decrease at this point. Silly, I know. Instead, my older son’s online lessons
increased from two to five. That means five online lessons in addition to his
hour+ of old fashioned paper and pencil homework.

But the real kicker is for
my third grader. The one who already finished his tests. Instead of nine online
lessons per week, in addition to regular homework, he now has sixteen. Sixteen
online lessons per week. Plus homework. Plus projects. Plus “pleasure” reading
and responses every night. Except, when is he supposed to do this reading for fun?

I know, I know. I could
homeschool them. I could pull them from their accelerated/advanced magnet
school. But it’s not just their school. This pervasive sickness is invading
education culture in our country. I’m not venting to complain, but to
lament.

They’re killing the love
of reading.

If you want kids with
higher lexile levels, make them fall in love. Hook them with whatever hooks
them so they can’t put the words down. Make them hunger for it. Comic book
superheroes, wimpy kids, princesses, elephants, or wizards away at boarding
school. Feed whatever stokes that fire. Read aloud and silently, outside or on
bean bags or stretched out on the floor. Open up their imaginations and pour
stuff in until something sticks. Celebrate the day they’re late to class
because they couldn’t stop reading. Let
them draw their book reports, or just stand up and talk about what was awesome
or what was cheesy, or write their own fan fiction with a new ending.

Because once they fall in
love, they won’t be able to stop. They’ll read that longer, more complicated
book because everyone’s talking about it at lunch, and it has a zombie and an
evil alien warlord. Or they’ll learn what the word obsequiously means because
that’s how that freshman acted around the student body president in that one contemporary
romance.

See, my son should be able
to read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with joy and anticipation and
maybe even a little disappointment that the beginning is so long. He shouldn’t
have to worry that if he doesn’t read the right number of pages each night, he
won’t make his goal of 1,050 pages for the quarter, or that he might have to
stop and read some easier, short books in between to complete the right number
of reports.

There are some things you
just can’t measure on standardized tests or additions to the portfolio. Every kid
is different. If you teach a kid to love reading, maybe you won’t see the
results right now. But you will change the world. You’ll change his or her world. And isn't that what really matters?

I've read plenty of books since my last book review. But none of them struck me with enough force to put fingers to keyboard to sing praises. I haven't really fallen in love with a book for a while. I want to thank Jacqueline Woodson for reminding me what that feels like.

In Brown Girl Dreaming, Woodson gives an autobiography of her childhood in captivating verse. She explores issues of geographical identity, race, religion, and personal dreams in a way that keeps the pages turning and leaves the reader hungry for more.

You may notice the seals on the picture above; Brown Girl Dreaming has won the National Book Award, a Newbery Medal, an NAACP Image Award, and the Coretta Scott King Author Book Award. I'm sure even more will follow. When reading this book, you know in just a few pages that you've discovered a modern day classic, timeless and stunning, that children and adults alike will be reading for generations to come.

If you haven't already, stop what you're doing and go read this book!

In the next two weeks, I plan to revise the first six chapters of my manuscript and write at least 10,000 new words on the full revision.
So, this one isn't exactly a win, but it's not a total fail either. I did revise the first 10 chapters and managed to cut two full scenes and over 4,000 words. I also saw another plot thread that may end up getting the ax, so that part worked out fine. On the new stuff side I've only written a measly 3,000 words. It's so hard to get all those old scenes out of my mind and start fresh! But I feel like now that I've gotten one chapter down, the flow will start to pick up.
READ:
I've just started All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven, which I expect to finish in a few days. But Writer Recharge is just what I need to kick myself into gear. I've spent the last week plotting and outlining for an R&R. In the next two weeks, I plan to revise the first six chapters of my manuscript and write at least 10,000 new words on the full revision.
I've just started All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven, which I expect to finish in a few days. As usual, I'm much more drawn to the male MC, Finch, in the dual narrative. I usually buy books in bulk, and my stack has dwindled to nothing. So of course I am open to suggestions for what to read next!
I want to strike up more conversations with strangers. I am so hopelessly introverted when it comes to those types of interactions. I want to ask at least one person per week what she is reading, how her day is going, or something like that.
Twelve-year-old Scott is still reeling from his mother’s
death. Why is his father dragging the family from their home in California to
the small French town of Chateau Moines? With his dad keeping secrets and his
sister fitting in right away, Scott struggles to adjust to his
new life. Enter Sylvie, a music-loving classmate who won’t admit how fascinated
she is by this American boy. If she can overcome her resistance, and her best
friend’s crush, Sylvie may be the perfect friend to help Scott find his place
in France. Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War protest era, Chronicles
from Chateau Moines is about loss and friendship, music and peace, and
overcoming family secrets.

Review:

As a girl, I dreamed of visiting France one day. As an adult, my visit there holds special memories. Not only did I spend an anniversary with my husband in Paris, but I also started writing seriously when I came home. I may be a little biased, but I absolutely loved the setting of Chateau Moines. From the
opening chapters, the author whisked me away to this small town in France. Set
in 1970, the characters' varying stances on the Vietnam War also give a unique
international view of the time period.

Sylvie and Scott’s distinct voices were also a high point. I
related quickly to Scott as a main character—I sympathized with his grief over
his mother’s death, and I rooted for him as he stood firm in his beliefs while
leading a war protest. Although the characters are younger, I think both the
theme and the voice would appeal to upper middle grades readers who enjoy
character-driven historical fiction and anyone who loves all things French.

I really skimped on my book reviewing last
year. I hate writing bad reviews. I know they’re helpful to other readers, but
as a writer, I really struggle with tearing down someone else’s work. I enjoy
critiquing and beta reading, but at that point the work is still in flux. If
the writer shares it with me, she is still willing to make changes. That
knowledge gives me the freedom to share what doesn’t work for me. But a
published work is complete. Just because I didn’t love it doesn’t mean someone
else will. And unfortunately, I only read a few books that I really loved last
year. Here’s hoping goal #2 changes that in 2015.

I’ve been fairly quiet on social media lately, other than
tweeting about the occasional silly, unimportant thing. It’s not because I
don’t care about what’s really going on in the world, but because I do. I care.
My heart breaks for the people who are hurting. For the brokenness in the media
and in our country and in the world as a whole. But I haven’t wanted to add my
voice to the fray when I didn’t have anything new to say.

We need them to be published. We
need to buy them. And we need to read them. The surest way to understand
someone else’s point of view is to become his friend. Maybe I can’t befriend everyone
I meet in real life, but I can connect with characters in books. In a book, I
can see the world through different eyes. And maybe that little bit of understanding
can grow into a real-life change in perspective. And what better place for that
to start than in books for our children. I’ve tried to write characters with
backgrounds outside of my own experience, and I’m sure I’ve made missteps. But
I won’t stop trying. For more information about the We Need Diverse Books

I’m pretty sure I’ve said this
sentence every day since my children were old enough to understand: Treat other
people the way that you want to be treated. It’s such a simple thing, but oh
what a difference it would make if we all really put it into practice. We all
want to be loved, appreciated, and respected. And if we could just start to
show those attitudes toward the people around us, I bet we’d see some big
changes.

At Thanksgiving, my son found a
W.W.J.D. plaque at my in-laws’ house and asked what it meant. Those letters,
representing, “What would Jesus do?” were printed and worn on bracelets when I
was a teenager. I hadn’t seen one in over fifteen years. I explained to my son
that it was a reminder of how followers of Jesus should act toward ourselves
and others. A week later, while going through my desk at home, I found a purple
W.W.J.D. bracelet. I don’t know how old it is, or where it came from, but it
was just another string tying my thoughts and emotions together. This year as I
celebrate the birth of Jesus, I plan to try to honor him by treating others not
only the way that I want to be treated, but the way that Jesus did. With grace,
understanding, and love. And for more

England is my favorite place to visit, and I was so inspired by the spooky and endearing Corfe Castle and Old Harry Rocks, both in the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. Our day in Windsor was like stepping onto the set of Downton Abbey. (No, I didn't cheat and watch the new season while I was there.) And of course London was magnificent as always, a fascinating blend of cultures and history and modernity, all wrapped up together. I wish I had pictures to share from the Treasures Collection at the British Library. They have the original draft of Persuasion, in Austen's own hand, with revisions. An original draft of Jane Eyre, in Bronte's own hand, with revisions. First printings of Shakespeare and Wuthering Heights. The Magna Carta. A Gutenberg Bible. It's just an overwhelming affirmation that words, writing, and their power of communication matter, not just now, but in the past and in the future.
I didn't want to link to the specific issues that bugged me because I didn't want to give them any more coverage. So I challenged myself to find good things happening. People helping people, instead of tearing each other down. Today I want to share two of those Good Things.

One day this week, the person in front of me paid for my latte at Starbucks. It took me by surprise, even though it's happened to me before, and even though I've done the same thing on occasion. Confession: I did not offer to pay for the person behind me. It struck me in that moment that those of us in line at Starbucks, myself included, could afford to pay for our own overpriced coffees. But what about the people who are truly hungry, sleeping on the sidewalks downtown?

My first thought was to take a donation to our local food bank. I came home, researched, and found a partner of our local organization, called Farm Share. Farm Share focuses on distributing fresh fruits and vegetables in bulk to agencies like food banks and soup kitchens with no fees. Farm Share is an exciting organization, and just the kind of thing I want to support. So, no, I didn't pay for the next latte in line at Starbucks. But it did spur me to make a donation to Farm Share when I got home. For every $10 donated, Farm Share distributes 110 pounds of food. That sure sounds like a Good Thing to me. Please click on the link for more information.

In the world of reading and writing, where this blog usually lives, I found my second Good Thing. The We Need Diverse Books Campaign continues to grow. The leap from awareness to action is now providing grants, support, educational kits, and more. Now we can lend our support through the IndieGoGo Fundraising effort here. From swag packs to agent-offered prizes for writers, you can't go wrong.

I hope you all are out there finding your Good Things, too.
We all live in glass houses in this digital age.

I write about this loss of privacy in my YA fiction, and the idea just won't stop cropping up in the real world. Athletes and celebrities seem to take the brunt of the public eye, but they're not the only ones anymore. It spans such a huge range of situations, from the embarrassing to the criminal.

I can't help wondering what it will mean for our society in the long run. Will it make us better, eventually, knowing that someone's always watching us? Or will it just expose more of the darkness we already fear exists?

The ugliness weighs on me, as a woman, a mother, and a Christian. We have access to multitudes of information and countless people in the palm of our hands, and what do we do with it? Threaten and intimidate? I'm not sure what's worse, the hatred or the indifference.

I don't have any real answers. But over the next few weeks, I'm challenging myself to use this technology that's supposed to make our lives better and easier for something good. I hope you'll take on that challenge, too.
You must enter the first round to continue, and the first page window begins on October 6. You'll get feedback on both, with the chance to revise for the final round on October 9. Click here for more information.
Recently we've had WriteOnCon, Operation Awesome's Secret Agent Contest, Brenda Drake's Pitch Wars, and Adventures in YA Publishing's Pitch Plus Five. And that was just August!

The primary goal of contests seems to be grabbing an agent's attention and garnering requests for your work. But these four were fabulous for another reason. Each offered feedback before the judged component, often from many critiquers at once.

The multitude of feedback has been a tad overwhelming for me, but also helpful. In the interest of helping and supporting others, when I landed a spot in Pitch Plus Five, I decided to read every entry and give at least one line of response. If you enjoy entering these contests, I highly suggest you try reading all the entries at least once. Here are a few things I learned:

1. It really is subjective.

You can hear it over and over again, but experiencing it first hand gives you new perspective. There were some amazing, well-written pages in Pitch Plus Five that just weren't for me. I'm not a huge fan of straight historical, and some jump-off-the-page voices just rub me the wrong way. I get that they're good. I admire them. But they just don't fit my personal tastes.

2. Contests take more time than you realize.

When I set out to read all entries, the simple math looked like this:

5 pages X 50 entries = 250 pages

Most books I read have more than 250 pages. I should've been able to go through them easily in about two days. But starting at the beginning and trying to immerse yourself in a new story takes more time than reading a book straight through. Then you have to think about what you enjoyed and what questions you had to frame your feedback. I didn't log my time, but it took much more than I expected. Contest judges volunteer their time on an even larger scale. Even if you don't agree with the feedback you get, you should always appreciate that someone took the time to try to help you. Time that could've been spent on their own writing, reading, or outside lives.

3. Your opening pages need to match the tone of your pitch.

In the first round of Pitch Plus Five, you only see the pages. The pitches don't come in until the second round. For all of my favorites, I got a clear sense of the genre, tone, and the main character without the pitch. For so many others, I felt like I was missing something. I enjoyed many of those pages. But the ones with the clearer tones stood out.

4. Seeing what works and what doesn't can help you improve as much as a specific crit on your own work.

My top five submissions were in different age groups or genres, but they all had certain things in common. Each pulled me in from the opening paragraph. They gave just a bit of exposition before jumping into the action. None fell into opening chapter cliches, and I didn't have to go back and re-read sentences for clarity. As I revise this time, I'm trying to check off these items on the list.

If you're out there in the contest trenches, I wish you luck and throw my support in your corner. I also encourage you to get the most out of the experience, from finding new writer friends to improving your craft.
There are so many ways to win.
He was a stranger to me, and circumstances just happened to have us sitting next to each other. He started by asking me what I was reading. (It was Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo.) I gave him a quick summary, and he shared with me how he used to enjoy reading so much, but things were just too busy between high school and his job to read for fun anymore.

He was a non-native English speaker, and it was learning to enjoy reading that brought the language alive for him. Any guess what the book that hooked him was? I wasn't surprised when he said Harry Potter, because I witnessed that same magic with my students in middle school year after year. My first revelation that day was a sense of regret that our education system hasn't picked up on this trend. In elementary and middle school, we encourage kids to read whatever they enjoy, to foster a love of books. We are dying for kids to read for fun. But in many high schools, the emphasis shifts. I think we'd do better to support reading as a source of entertainment instead of just work.

Next he asked me if I was a teacher. He said I just had that look, though I think it was more my enthusiasm for talking about Harry Potter, and books in general, that gave me away. So, here's the thing. I told him I was a teacher, but I didn't tell him I'm a writer. (I'm embarrassed to say I didn't relish the follow-up questions that come with that.) He could've asked more about teaching, or even stopped talking to this mom-aged lady, but next he asked me what I'd wanted to be when I was his age.

I can't remember anyone asking me that question in my adult life. So I told him. I told him how I'd always loved reading. Though there were many things I'd wanted to be throughout my childhood, when I was eighteen, I wanted to work in publishing as an editor. It was the only way I could see where reading could be my job. I didn't think I had the creativity to write, but I'd known I wanted to work with books. Teaching did let me do that, but not in the way I'd imagined.

It's taken a long and winding road, but I am finally following that dream. I'm really glad we crossed paths that day, because he reminded me why I'm doing what I'm doing. I love writing, and I'm proud of the novels I've completed. But whatever the outcome of my own writing career, joining this community, through SCBWI and social media, has allowed me to practice exactly what I wanted to do. Supporting writers. Reading books on the front lines of the industry through CPs, betas, and ARCs. And helping, even in some small way, books come to the shelves that bring our language and our world alive for young readers.
In the grand scheme of things, after a month filled with one tragedy after another in the news, I'm looking forward to ushering in a new season full of potential, growth, and thanksgiving. Today I'm photo blogging with images to remind me of where I've been and keep me inspired for the times ahead.
